Man drowns near Galena

A man apparently drowned in a lake near Galena Tuesday evening.

Police said Darrell R. Albert Sr., 51, of Fairbanks, had been drinking alcohol with two friends earlier in the evening. The threesome then decided to drive to Elmer's Lake, 3 1/2 miles east of Galena, Galena Police Chief Gerald Meece said. Albert dived in, Meece said, "and didn't come up. There's a real deep hole out there. Apparently he stepped in that deep hole. The water's real, real cold." Police were called at 8:15 p.m. Rescuers dragged the lake and found Albert's body at 9 p.m.
